“Onion Prices in Bengaluru Soar to ₹75 per Kilogram Amid Drought-Driven Demand”
Onions have become pricier in Bengaluru, reaching ₹75 per kilogram due to increased demand amid a southern state drought. The price surge may continue as onion stocks decline nationwide.
Onions have become a costly commodity in Bengaluru, with prices soaring to ₹75 per kilogram, a steep increase driven by surging demand amidst a drought in the southern state of Karnataka. Over the past week, the cost of onions in the city has surged by 40 to 50 percent per kilogram. This marks a significant price jump, as just a week prior, onions were available for ₹40 to ₹45 per kilogram.
The drought in the northern Karnataka region, known for its substantial onion cultivation, is cited as one of the primary reasons for the dramatic price increase. With the region facing water scarcity and agricultural challenges, onion production has been severely affected.
This upward trend in onion prices is not limited to Bengaluru alone. Even in the national capital, New Delhi, and the National Capital Region (NCR), onion prices are causing concerns for consumers. Government data reveals that the maximum price of onions has climbed to approximately ₹70 per kilogram in this region. This surge in prices is expected to persist until December.
The Union consumer ministry has taken action to mitigate the rising onion prices. Buffer stock onions are being released in both wholesale and retail markets in states experiencing significant price hikes. Since mid-August, approximately 1.7 lakh tonnes of buffer onions have been distributed across 22 states at various locations.
As the drought and onion stock depletion continue to impact the nation’s onion market, consumers are likely to feel the pinch in their wallets. The situation emphasizes the importance of stabilizing onion production and distribution to prevent further escalation in prices.
