In a tragic incident, a 52-year-old businessman, Philip Hitesh Shah, took his own life by jumping from the Atal Setu, part of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), early Wednesday morning. This incident comes just two days after a deputy manager at a nationalized bank ended his life by jumping from the same bridge.
According to police reports, Philip Shah, who lived in Matunga, had been struggling with depression for the past few months. His family suspects that this mental health struggle may have led him to take such a drastic step. On the day of the incident, Shah drove his sedan onto the Atal Setu, parked it, and then jumped into the sea.
CCTV footage from the bridge alerted staff to a parked vehicle, prompting a rescue team to investigate. Tragically, despite being located and rushed to a hospital, Shah was pronounced dead on arrival. Identification was confirmed through his Aadhaar card found in his car. Police have registered a case of accidental death at the Nhava Sheva police station in Navi Mumbai.
This recent incident echoes the case of Sushant Chakravarti, a deputy manager with a nationalized bank, who also jumped from the Atal Setu on Monday. His body was discovered washed up on the shores of Navi Mumbai the following day. Chakravarti’s wife indicated that he was experiencing significant work pressure, which may have contributed to his decision.
The Atal Setu, inaugurated in January 2024, connects South Mumbai with Navi Mumbai and is celebrated as the longest sea bridge in the country, stretching 21.8 kilometers across the water.
The series of suicides raises concerns about mental health issues and the pressures faced by individuals in high-stress professions, prompting a call for greater awareness and support systems to help those in distress.
