Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced the expansion of the state government’s flagship breakfast scheme to include state-aided primary schools, ensuring more children have access to nutritious meals. Launched by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in 2022 for students in class 1 to 5 in select government schools, the scheme has now been extended to benefit an additional 2,23,384 children across over 3,955 government-aided primary schools.

Stalin emphasized the importance of this welfare initiative, stating, “No matter how much it costs the government, no child should go to school hungry.” The expansion marks a significant step towards alleviating hunger among schoolchildren, enhancing attendance rates, and reducing dropout rates.

The Chief Minister highlighted that providing nutritious breakfasts is not just a welfare measure but also a strategic investment. He instructed officials to conduct surprise checks to ensure the quality of food remains high, maintaining the scheme’s effectiveness.

This expansion coincided with the birth anniversary of late Congress Chief Minister K Kamaraj, who, in 1957, initiated the free midday meal scheme in Tamil Nadu—a program that continues to benefit students today. The historical roots of providing meals to students in Tamil Nadu date back even further, with initiatives in 1920 under Mayor PT Thiyagarayar and further expansions by the Justice Party in 1925.

Tamil Nadu has a rich history of supporting student welfare through nutrition programs. In 1982, AIADMK Chief Minister MG Ramachandran introduced a year-round nutritious meal program, setting a precedent for sustained government support in this area. Subsequently, in 1989, DMK Chief Minister M Karunanidhi enhanced the program by including eggs and bananas, catering to diverse dietary needs among students.
