Microsoft has recently undergone another round of layoffs impacting various teams and locations within the company. While the exact number of employees affected has not been disclosed, reports indicate that the cuts primarily targeted roles in product and program management functions.

According to Wired Geek, the layoffs are part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to streamline operations and optimize workforce management. This move follows similar restructuring initiatives undertaken by the tech giant earlier this year, continuing a trend of organizational adjustments aimed at supporting strategic growth areas.

A spokesperson from Microsoft confirmed the layoffs, stating, “Organizational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.”

In 2023, Microsoft also undertook significant restructuring efforts, with the latest job cuts in 2024 adding to previous reductions. At the beginning of this year, the company reduced its workforce by 2,000 employees in the gaming division. Last month, approximately 1,000 positions were affected, including roles within the Azure cloud unit and the HoloLens mixed-reality team.

The tech industry at large has witnessed a wave of layoffs in 2024, reflecting broader economic shifts and strategic realignments within companies. According to layoffs.fyi, nearly 100,000 employees have been laid off across various tech firms this year alone, following a similar trend observed in 2023 where approximately 260,000 tech workers lost their jobs.

Microsoft’s recent actions underscore the challenges and adjustments faced by tech companies amidst evolving market dynamics and the need to adapt to changing consumer demands and technological advancements.
