In a significant move aimed at enhancing digital payment solutions for Indian tourists in Europe, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has marked a milestone with its integration at Galeries Lafayette’s flagship store in Haussmann, Paris. This initiative, facilitated by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) in collaboration with French payment leader Lyra, underscores UPI’s growing international presence ahead of the Paris Olympics.

Following the successful implementation of UPI for online ticket bookings at the Eiffel Tower, this partnership extends UPI’s reach to one of Paris’s most renowned retail destinations. Starting July 26, as Paris prepares to host the Olympics, Indian visitors can now use UPI at Galeries Lafayette, known for its iconic status and high foot traffic among tourists.

Jawed Ashraf, Ambassador of India to France and Monaco, highlighted the strategic significance of this collaboration in promoting UPI as a preferred digital payment method among Indian travelers. He emphasized that this initiative not only facilitates convenient transactions but also supports UPI’s internationalization efforts.

Ritesh Shukla, CEO of NPCI International, expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to bolster UPI adoption in Europe. “Our collaboration with Galeries Lafayette not only enables UPI payments at a prestigious venue but also boosts UPI adoption as a convenient and secure cross-border payment method for Indian tourists,” Shukla stated.

Christophe Mariette, Chairman of Lyra India, emphasized the pioneering aspect of this collaboration, marking the first in-store acceptance of UPI in Europe. This milestone reflects Lyra’s commitment to advancing secure e-commerce and proximity payments in the region.

NPCI aims to leverage this partnership to expand UPI’s market presence in France and across Europe, positioning it as a reliable and secure payment solution for global transactions. With the Paris Olympics expected to draw a large number of Indian visitors, this initiative is poised to showcase UPI’s capabilities on an international stage.
