The Airports Council International (ACI) World has ranked Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport as the tenth busiest airport in the world for the year 2023. This ranking marks a significant achievement for the airport, highlighting its role as a major hub for air travel in the global landscape.
Data released by the ACI on Monday revealed that the IGI Airport handled a total of 7.22 crore passengers annually, showcasing its robust operational capacity and consistent growth in passenger traffic. The airport’s ranking has steadily climbed over the years, moving from 17th place in 2019 to 10th place in 2023, despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in the United States secured the top rank globally with 10.46 crore passengers, showcasing the dominance of American airports in the global aviation sector. Notably, five out of the top 10 busiest airports for passenger traffic are located in the United States, highlighting the country’s strong presence in the international air travel market.
The ACI report also highlighted notable shifts in airport rankings, with Tokyo’s Haneda airport making a significant leap from 16th position in 2022 to 5th place in 2023. This jump underscores the dynamic nature of the aviation industry and the evolving trends in global air travel patterns.
According to Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the Director General of ACI World, the global air travel recovery in 2023 was primarily driven by the international segment, fueled by factors such as China’s reopening and a growing interest in travel despite macroeconomic conditions. He noted that while airports in the United States continue to dominate the top ranks, there are notable advancements seen in airports like Dubai International Airport, which rose to the second rank for the first time.
The ACI’s airport rankings are based on comprehensive data collected from over 2,600 airports across more than 180 countries and territories worldwide, providing a comprehensive assessment of the global aviation landscape. The remarkable recovery in global passenger traffic, reaching 93.8% of pre-pandemic levels, reflects the resilience and adaptability of the aviation industry in overcoming challenges and meeting the demands of travelers worldwide.
