Vistara, one of India’s leading airlines, faced recent disruptions in its flight schedules, leading to flight cancellations and inconvenience for passengers. CEO Vinod Kannan addressed the situation, offering apologies for the disruptions and assuring that operations would return to normalcy by May.
The disruptions, primarily caused by a stretched pilot roster, resulted in the cancellation of more than 125 flights over three days in early April. However, Kannan expressed confidence that such last-minute cancellations would not occur after the upcoming weekend, as the airline’s buffer situation with pilots stabilizes.
“We are back to normal as far as the flights that are operating… the need to cancel flights at short notice will not happen after this weekend,” stated Kannan. He acknowledged the concerns raised by pilots and mentioned that the airline is reviewing and addressing these issues.
Despite having to reduce 20-25 daily flights currently, Vistara aims to optimize its schedule for May and expects to resume normal operations by then. Kannan emphasized the airline’s commitment to rectifying the situation swiftly, extending apologies to affected customers.
“I don’t think there is an apology to the pilots but customers of course… We have been reaching out to all customers (affected), apologize for the disruptions,” stated Kannan. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with pilots to address their concerns and improve rostering practices to prevent future disruptions.
Regarding the speculation about new contracts for pilots contributing to the crisis, Kannan clarified that while this was not the main critical reason, it did impact rostering and operational resilience. However, he acknowledged the support received from pilots in managing the situation.
As Vistara works towards restoring normalcy and ensuring a smoother travel experience for passengers, Kannan reiterated the airline’s commitment to addressing challenges promptly and delivering reliable services.
