Edtech giant Unacademy has faced scrutiny and social media attention following its recent decision to lay off approximately 250 employees across various departments, as reported by TechCrunch. The layoffs come amidst a broader restructuring effort aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and achieving sustainable growth.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Unacademy terminated around 150 employees from its sales division and another 100 from marketing, business, and product teams. This move marks a significant downsizing, adding to the approximately 2,000 jobs the company has cut overall.

The layoffs have drawn attention to CEO and co-founder Gaurav Munjal’s comments made just a day before the layoffs were announced. On July 1, Munjal responded to a post by Bhavin Turakhia, founder of Zeta, discussing the pitfalls that often lead to startup failures, particularly citing “premature founder boredom.” Turakhia highlighted the importance for startups to transition into “boring” companies with sustainable profitability and well-defined internal processes.

In a statement addressing the layoffs, Unacademy acknowledged the restructuring as part of efforts to streamline operations and achieve long-term goals. The company emphasized its commitment to supporting affected employees during the transition.

Meanwhile, Unacademy has been focusing on expanding its physical presence alongside cost-cutting measures over the past two years. Munjal previously emphasized the importance of an “offline play” in building successful businesses in India.

The layoffs at Unacademy underscore the challenges faced by startups in balancing rapid growth with sustainable operations, sparking discussions on social media about the evolving dynamics within India’s startup ecosystem.
