In a pivotal development for India’s burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Gujarat appears to be the frontrunner in Elon Musk’s considerations for establishing Tesla’s maiden manufacturing facility in the country. Rushikesh Patel, Gujarat’s Health Minister and government spokesperson, expressed strong optimism regarding Tesla’s potential decision to set up its plant in the state.
Addressing queries on reports speculating Tesla’s interest in Gujarat, Patel affirmed the state government’s enthusiastic anticipation of the electric vehicle giant’s arrival. “Even Elon Musk is looking at Gujarat as his first choice,” Patel affirmed, highlighting the state’s strong standing in Musk’s evaluation during Tesla’s survey to identify a suitable location for its plant in India.
Patel emphasized ongoing communication with Tesla, hinting at the possibility of an imminent official announcement regarding Tesla’s entry into Gujarat. He underscored the state’s readiness to extend comprehensive support akin to past collaborations with automotive giants like Tata, Ford, and Suzuki.
Elon Musk’s June meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York had foreshadowed Tesla’s interest in India. Following the meeting, Musk had expressed intentions to visit India in 2024, signifying a strategic interest in the nation’s growing EV market.
S J Haider, Gujarat’s Additional Chief Secretary for Industries and Mines, previously revealed ongoing discussions between the Centre and Tesla regarding the establishment of a manufacturing facility in India. Haider stressed Gujarat’s proactive approach, intending to secure a pivotal role in Tesla’s future plans.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal added further weight to Tesla’s inclination toward India, stating the company’s intent to procure components worth approximately USD 1.9 billion from the country, a substantial increase from the previous year’s USD 1 billion.
The collective efforts of Gujarat’s government, coupled with Tesla’s keen interest in the state, signal a potentially transformative phase for India’s EV industry. The prospect of Tesla establishing its inaugural manufacturing base in Gujarat underscores the state’s attractiveness as a key hub for cutting-edge automotive technology, marking a significant stride towards accelerating India’s EV ecosystem on the global stage.
