In light of the recent global Microsoft outage, Bhavish Aggarwal, CEO of Ola, has highlighted critical issues related to data security and localization. His remarks underscore the urgent need for more robust data protection measures in India.

The outage, which affected numerous sectors including aviation and finance, was attributed to a third-party software update, according to Microsoft. The company has been working to restore services disrupted by the glitch, which led to significant operational setbacks worldwide.

Aggarwal pointed out a significant vulnerability in the current data management practices, noting that 80% of Ola’s data is stored outside India. He emphasized that such a situation could pose serious risks, especially in the event of deliberate cyber-attacks or disruptions.

“Outages are momentary with no deliberate intent to cause harm. They can happen to any company,” Aggarwal said. “However, this represents an outcome that could also result from malicious actions. Given that a large portion of our data is stored abroad, addressing these risks becomes challenging.”

Aggarwal called on the Indian government to implement stricter data localization norms to mitigate these risks. He urged for policies that ensure data security and prevent potential vulnerabilities caused by data stored in foreign jurisdictions.

Microsoft’s response to the outage has been focused on resolving the issue caused by the third-party software. The company has acknowledged the disruptions and is working to restore services for affected customers as quickly as possible.
