A McDonald’s outlet in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar district has had its license revoked by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) following an investigation into the use of cheese substitutes in their dishes. The fast-food giant faced scrutiny after it was discovered that they were using a “cheese-like” product in their menu items without properly disclosing it to customers.
The controversy began when FDA officials conducted an inspection of the McDonald’s outlet in Kedgaon in October 2023. During the inspection, it was revealed that several menu items, including American Cheese Burger, Cheese Burger, and Italian Cheesy Lava Burger, contained a cheese substitute instead of real cheese. This led to concerns about misleading customers and false advertising.
Rajendra Bade, a food safety official from FDA-Ahmednagar, explained that the joint was using a cheese analogue or substitute, which contains both milk fat and vegetable fat, instead of pure cheese. Following objections raised during the inspection, the outlet’s license was initially suspended in November last year.
The matter escalated when McDonald’s appealed against the suspension before the FDA commissioner in Mumbai. After hearing arguments from both sides, the commissioner instructed the fast-food chain to revise their labeling and prominently tag products containing cheese substitutes.
In response, McDonald’s submitted a compliance report, stating that they had amended their product names and removed the word ‘cheese’ from certain items. The outlet renamed products such as Cheesy Nuggets to Veg Nuggets and Mc Cheese Veg Burger to Cheddar Delight Veg Burger.
In a statement shared on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) by Westlife Foodworld, McDonald’s India (West & South) emphasized their commitment to transparency in ingredients and quality standards. They assured customers that only genuine, high-quality cheese is used in their products and stated that they adhere to global standards in collaboration with suppliers.
The McDonald’s outlet’s license has now been revoked following the compliance report. However, the company remains engaged with authorities on the matter and maintains that they are fully compliant with all applicable food laws.
As the cheese controversy unfolds, consumers are reminded of the importance of transparency and accurate labeling in the food industry, with regulatory bodies ensuring adherence to standards for consumer safety.
