New Delhi, June 12, 2025: IndiGo, India’s largest airline, has announced the appointment of Vikram Singh Mehta as its new Chairman, following the completion of outgoing Chairman Venkataramani Sumantran’s five-year term on the board of InterGlobe Aviation Ltd.
Mehta, who has served as a board member at IndiGo since May 2022, brings with him a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors. A former Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer, Mehta previously held leadership roles including Chairman of the Shell Group of Companies in India, and CEO of Shell Markets and Shell Chemicals in Egypt. He has also served on the boards of several prominent organizations.
With academic credentials that include a degree in Mathematics from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi University, and master’s degrees in Politics and Economics from Oxford University and Energy Economics from Tufts University, Mehta is widely regarded for his expertise in energy, governance, and business strategy.
In a statement, IndiGo lauded Venkataramani Sumantran for steering the airline’s board through a critical period of post-COVID recovery and expansion. Appointed in May 2022, Sumantran oversaw a period of “incredible growth” for IndiGo, cementing its leadership in the Indian aviation sector.
Following the leadership change, IndiGo’s board now includes seven members, including co-founder Rahul Bhatia.
Promoter Stake Sale
In related news, IndiGo promoter and co-founder Rakesh Gangwal and his family trust divested a 5.72% stake in the airline through open market transactions, raising ₹11,564 crore. The sale reflects ongoing portfolio adjustments by the Gangwal family, which has previously indicated plans to gradually reduce its stake in the airline.
IndiGo continues to lead the Indian aviation industry by market share, with ongoing fleet expansion, international route growth, and a renewed focus on operational efficiency under its current leadership.
