India’s largest airline, IndiGo, finds itself in hot water as its app and website experience technical difficulties during a period of widespread frustration over flight delays. The airline, grappling with a series of delayed flights, announced a system upgrade, leaving travelers unable to make bookings, modify existing reservations, or use the web check-in facility.

In a statement shared on social media, IndiGo explained, “We are on flight mode. Our systems are undergoing an upgrade to provide an improved customer experience. While we are ensuring uninterrupted flight operations, self-baggage drop and Digi Yatra will be unavailable, and no bookings/modifications/web check-in can be done as our website, mobile app, and contact centre are impacted. We will be back soon. Stay tuned.”

The outage comes on the heels of a publicized announcement from the airline about the duration of the system upgrade. IndiGo had previously informed users that the upgrade would take place from 2300hrs IST on January 16, 2024, until 0830hrs IST on January 17, 2024. During this period, the website, app, and contact center would be impacted.

IndiGo has faced increasing criticism for widespread flight delays across the nation. The situation escalated when a passenger on a Delhi-Goa flight reportedly attacked the co-pilot after waiting for nearly 10 hours. The delays were attributed to adverse weather conditions, including heavy fog, and a change of crew due to flight duty time limitations.

Bollywood actress Richa Chadha took to social media to share her own experience with delayed IndiGo flights. In a tweet, she expressed frustration with multiple delays over three consecutive days and raised concerns about the lack of accountability in situations where airlines hold a virtual monopoly on certain routes.

“I am surprised only one person got physically assaulted because tempers were running very high (I don’t condone violence). Lesson: Monopoly – whether airlines, airport ownership or leadership – creates a lack of accountability. Common citizens suffer, with no recourse,” Chadha stated.

The public outcry over IndiGo’s recent challenges underscores the growing concerns over airline punctuality, customer communication, and the impact of operational disruptions on travelers across the country. IndiGo, a major player in the Indian aviation sector, now faces the challenge of restoring confidence and addressing customer grievances amid the ongoing flight delays and technical glitches.
