Savitri Jindal, the 74-year-old matriarch of the Jindal family and listed by Forbes India as the richest woman in the country with a net worth of USD 29.1 billion, has announced her candidacy for the Haryana Assembly elections as an independent candidate. This decision comes after her initial bid for a BJP ticket did not materialize.
On the final day for filing nominations, Jindal submitted her papers to contest the Hisar constituency, challenging Haryana Minister and sitting MLA Kamal Gupta. Jindal’s entry into the electoral fray marks a significant moment, given her stature and the high-profile nature of the contest.
Savitri Jindal, the widow of the late industrialist O P Jindal and mother of BJP MP Naveen Jindal, emphasized her commitment to the development of Hisar. “I have pledged to serve Hisar for its development and transformation. The people of Hisar are my family, and Om Prakash Jindal had established my relationship with this family,” she said after filing her nomination.
Having previously represented Hisar as a Congress MLA in 2005 and 2009, Jindal was also a minister in the Hooda government from 2013. She left Congress in March this year, coinciding with her son Naveen Jindal’s departure from the party to join the BJP. Despite her familial ties to the BJP, she clarified that her decision to run as an independent was not a rebellion against the party. “It won’t be considered so. I had only campaigned for my son in the Lok Sabha polls. I have not taken any membership of the BJP,” she explained.
The Haryana Assembly elections, scheduled for October 5, will see 90 seats contested, with results expected to be declared on October 8. Savitri Jindal’s independent bid adds a new dynamic to the political landscape of Hisar, highlighting her continued influence and commitment to her constituency.
