Amidst the escalating tensions, India’s Minister of Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw, has intervened by inviting representatives from Google for a meeting on Monday to address the ongoing dispute. Expressing optimism for a swift resolution, Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of safeguarding the interests of Indian startups amidst Google’s policies.
The root of the conflict lies in Google’s imposition of fees ranging from 11 per cent to 26 per cent on in-app payments, following orders from antitrust authorities to revise its fee structure. Despite court decisions seemingly allowing Google to proceed with the new fee or remove apps, Indian companies remain steadfast in contesting this imposition, citing concerns over its impact on their businesses.
One of the affected companies, Matrimony.com, expressed dismay over the removal of its matchmaking apps, including Bharat Matrimony, from the Play Store. Founder Murugavel Janakiraman highlighted the potential widespread impact on India’s internet landscape, particularly in the realm of matrimonial services, which have gained immense popularity in the country.
In addition to matrimonial apps, Info Edge, the parent company of job search app Naukri and real estate platform 99acres, also faced removal from the Play Store. Despite initial share price fluctuations, both Matrimony.com and Info Edge managed to recover partially by the end of the day.
Google, on its part, defended its actions, asserting that the removal of apps was necessary due to non-compliance with its billing policies.
