In recent developments, Google has initiated another round of layoffs affecting key teams within the company. This move comes as part of Google’s ongoing reorganization efforts aimed at streamlining operations and focusing on strategic priorities.

According to reports, Google has informed employees from teams such as Python, Dart, Flutter, and others about the layoffs. This decision is attributed to the company’s reorganization strategy, which seeks to optimize resources and align teams with its core product priorities.

Google spokesperson Alex García-Kummert commented on the layoffs, stating, “As we’ve said, we’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.” However, specific details regarding the number of employees affected by these layoffs have not been officially disclosed by Google.

The layoffs at Google in 2024 follow a series of job cuts that began in 2023, during which approximately 12,000 employees were asked to leave the company. CEO Sundar Pichai had previously indicated that layoffs would continue in phases throughout 2024.

The impacted employees primarily come from teams specializing in programming languages. Despite the layoffs, Google is committed to supporting affected employees by offering opportunities to transition into other roles within the company or explore options outside Google.

Speaking about the company’s restructuring efforts, García-Kummert mentioned, “To best position us for these opportunities, throughout the second half of 2023 and into 2024, a number of our teams made changes to become more efficient and work better, remove layers, and align their resources to their biggest product priorities.” The goal is to simplify structures, reduce bureaucracy, and enable employees to focus on innovation and core priorities.
