“Elon Musk’s Grok AI Chatbot Now Accessible for All Users, But Comes with Restrictions”
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, is now available to all users on X (formerly Twitter), marking a significant shift in its accessibility. Initially exclusive to X’s Premium subscribers, Grok’s free-tier version was rolled out on Friday, offering non-premium users limited access. This move is part of Musk’s strategy to expand Grok’s user base and make the chatbot more accessible while competing with other popular AI models in the market.
The free-tier version allows users to send up to 10 messages to Grok every two hours, offering a more restrained experience compared to the Premium users, who can send up to 50 questions per day. In addition, free-tier users can analyse up to three images and generate up to four new images daily. However, Premium subscribers enjoy greater flexibility and more extensive capabilities with Grok, including enhanced features and higher message limits. Premium users also have access to a broader set of image-related tools.
Grok, developed by Musk’s AI company xAI, was originally launched as a premium feature in 2023 and quickly gained attention for its unique approach as a “humorous AI assistant.” Over the months, it was enhanced with additional features, including text-to-image generation tools. While some of the generated images stirred controversy, Grok’s capabilities, including its research assistance, coding support, and automation potential for businesses, made it a useful tool for many users.
The rollout of the free-tier version represents a strategic effort to capture a broader audience and rival established chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, Microsoft’s Copilot, and Anthropic’s Claude. These competitors have a strong presence in the AI space, with millions of active users, and Musk’s move to offer Grok for free could potentially boost its user base significantly.
Users interested in accessing the free-tier Grok must have an X account at least seven days old and linked to a phone number. This ensures a secure environment for interacting with the AI, which has proven valuable in fields such as customer service and research support.
Grok’s ability to scale is supported by xAI’s access to massive data, including data from X and Tesla’s vehicle cameras, alongside a newly constructed supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. This infrastructure allows Grok to train on vast datasets, further enhancing its capabilities.
Despite its free-tier rollout, xAI has not shared specific user numbers, but estimates suggest that the chatbot could attract millions of users, adding to its existing user base that was primarily composed of premium subscribers. As Grok continues to evolve, its position in the AI market will likely strengthen, providing a formidable competitor in the chatbot landscape.
