The report highlights significant trends and shifts in the aviation sector, including market share dynamics, flight cancellations, and punctuality.

The DGCA data shows that over 13.7 million passengers flew on domestic airlines in May 2024, up from 13.2 million in May 2023. This marks a notable increase in passenger numbers, reflecting a steady recovery in the aviation industry. From January to May 2024, domestic airlines carried 66.142 million passengers, compared to 63.607 million in the same period the previous year, registering an annual growth of 3.99% and a monthly growth of 4.40%.

Among the major airlines, IndiGo continues to dominate the market, with its share increasing to 61.6% in May from 60.8% in April 2024. In contrast, Air India’s market share declined to 13.7% from 14.2% in the previous month. Vistara maintained a steady market share at 9.2%.

The data revealed that Air India experienced the highest number of flight cancellations in May, followed by IndiGo and SpiceJet. Weather conditions were the most common reason for these cancellations, followed by operational issues. SpiceJet received the maximum number of passenger complaints among the major airlines.

In terms of punctuality, Akasa Air topped the list with an On-Time Performance (OTP) of 85.9%, followed by Vistara at 81.9%. AIX Connect recorded an OTP of 74.9%, while IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet had OTPs of 72.8%, 68.4%, and 60.7%, respectively.

Despite challenges such as flight cancellations and passenger complaints, the industry shows signs of robust growth and improved performance metrics.
