Cognizant Addresses Criticism Over ₹2.5 Lakh Fresher Salary: Clarifies It’s for Non-Engineering Graduates
IT giant Cognizant has responded to widespread criticism regarding a reported ₹2.5 lakh annual salary for freshers, clarifying that this figure has been “grossly misrepresented.” The company emphasized that the package in question was not for engineering graduates but rather for candidates with a three-year undergraduate degree from non-engineering backgrounds.

The controversy began when a job listing by Cognizant offering a ₹2.5 lakh package for freshers sparked outrage on social media. Many users slammed the salary as “unlivable” and criticized the company for not offering more competitive compensation. In response, Cognizant clarified the misunderstanding in a statement released on Sunday.
Surya Gummadi, Executive Vice President and President of Cognizant Americas, addressed the issue, stating, “Our recent job posting for talent from non-engineering backgrounds, with a three-year undergraduate degree, has been grossly misrepresented. This job posting, with compensation of ₹2.52 lakhs annually, was only for candidates with a three-year undergraduate degree and not for engineering graduates.”
Gummadi further clarified that the annual compensation for fresh engineering graduates at Cognizant ranges from ₹4 lakh to ₹12 lakh, depending on the hiring category, skill set, and advanced industry-accredited certifications. “The compensation we offer for engineering graduates is highly competitive within the IT services peer group,” he added.
In addition to addressing the salary controversy, Gummadi also commented on the backlash over low salary hikes within the company. He explained that the merit increases for this cycle are tied to both individual performance and broader industry dynamics. “This year, we are one of the few IT companies in India that have delivered increments and bonuses for employees. This recent pay hike is the fourth that most Cognizant associates have received in the past three years. Moreover, these hikes are just one component of the comprehensive total rewards,” he said.
Gummadi concluded by reinforcing Cognizant’s commitment to being a “people-first company,” highlighting the firm’s efforts to provide competitive compensation and rewards to its employees amidst challenging economic conditions.
Cognizant’s clarification comes as the company seeks to maintain its reputation in the highly competitive IT industry, where salary expectations for fresh graduates are a significant factor in attracting top talent. The company’s swift response to the controversy aims to reassure current and potential employees of its commitment to fair and competitive compensation practices.
