“British Tech Mogul Mike Lynch Among Those Missing After Superyacht Sinks in Sicilian Storm”

A violent storm off the coast of Sicily early Monday morning led to the sinking of a luxury yacht, leaving British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch among the missing. The 56-meter British-flagged yacht, named “Bayesian,” was anchored near the port of Porticello when severe weather struck, causing the vessel to sink just before dawn.

According to the Italian Coast Guard, the yacht rapidly went down amidst the storm, and while 15 people, including Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old girl, managed to escape, one person, believed to be the yacht’s chef, has been confirmed dead. The identities of the missing and deceased have not been officially released.

Mike Lynch, 59, is a prominent British tech mogul often compared to Bill Gates due to his significant contributions to the technology industry. He is best known for founding Autonomy, the UK’s largest software company, which he built upon research conducted at Cambridge University. Lynch sold Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP) for $11 billion in 2011. However, the sale led to prolonged legal disputes, with HP accusing Lynch of fraud.

After a decade-long legal battle and facing a criminal trial in San Francisco, Lynch was acquitted of all charges in June, following a period of effective house arrest. His acquittal marked a significant relief for Lynch, who had consistently maintained that HP mishandled the integration of Autonomy.

The name of the yacht, “Bayesian,” was particularly meaningful to Lynch, reflecting the Bayesian theory central to his PhD thesis and the software that contributed to his fortune. The search for Lynch and the other missing individuals continues as authorities work to determine the cause of the storm’s severity and its impact on the yacht.
