In a major breakthrough, the Bihar Police seized 50 grams of the highly valuable radioactive substance Californium, estimated to be worth approximately ₹850 crore in the international market. The Gopalganj Police arrested three individuals involved in the smuggling of this rare material.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Chhote Lal Prasad (40) from Parsauni Buzurg village, Chandan Gupta (40) from Kaushalya Chowk, and Chandan Ram from Kushahar Mathia, all in Uttar Pradesh and Gopalganj respectively. The suspects were apprehended on Thursday evening while traveling on a motorcycle. They were found in possession of four mobile phones and the 50 grams of Californium.
Gopalganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Swarn Prabhat confirmed the seizure and the arrests. He explained that the police acted on a tip-off regarding the smuggling operation. A specialized team, including members from the District Investigation Unit (DIU), Special Operations Group-7 (SOG-7), and the Special Task Force (STF), was formed to conduct the operation. The team was deployed at the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh-Balthari border under the supervision of the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kuchaykot police station.
Californium, known for its high value, is priced at around ₹17 crore per gram in the international market, making the total value of the seized substance around ₹850 crore. The smuggling ring had reportedly been attempting to sell this material for several months.
A special team from the Forensic Science Laboratory has been called in to handle the substance and conduct further investigations. The accused were also carrying a test report of the Californium, which will aid in the investigation. Due to the critical nature of the substance, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) has been informed to oversee a thorough investigation. The DAE is the central authority responsible for managing nuclear materials in India, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
