In a recent development, the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) announced a price hike of ₹2 per litre across all variants of Amul milk, effective from June 3rd. This decision comes in response to the rising operational and production costs faced by the dairy industry.
According to Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of GCMMF, the price adjustment is necessary to offset the increased expenses and ensure fair compensation for milk producers. The last time Amul raised milk prices was in February 2023.
With this revision, the new prices for popular Amul variants like 500 ml Amul buffalo milk, 500 ml Amul Gold milk, and 500 ml Amul Shakti milk will be ₹36, ₹33, and ₹30, respectively.
GCMMF emphasized that despite the price hike, the increase of ₹2 per litre translates to a modest 3-4% rise in Maximum Retail Price (MRP), which is lower than the average food inflation rate. The federation also highlighted that Amul had refrained from increasing milk prices since February 2023 in major markets.
As per GCMMF’s policy, nearly 80 paise of every rupee paid by consumers for Amul milk and milk products directly benefits milk producers. The federation aims to sustain remunerative milk prices for farmers and encourage higher milk production through these price adjustments.
The decision to raise milk prices reflects the challenges faced by the dairy industry in managing production costs amidst economic fluctuations. This move by Amul aims to strike a balance between ensuring fair compensation for farmers and maintaining affordability for consumers in the face of rising operational expenses.
