Dr. Chivukula, who completed his M Tech in Aerospace Engineering at IIT Madras in the 1970s, has significantly impacted the institution that helped shape his career. V Kamakoti, the Director of IIT Madras, highlighted the generosity of Chivukula’s donation during a recent press briefing. Kamakoti noted that Dr. Chivukula’s donation comes nearly 53 years after his studies at the institute and reflects his success and gratitude.
The donation is part of a larger sum of ₹513 crore received by IIT Madras in the financial year 2023-2024, with contributions from former students totaling ₹367 crore. In honor of Dr. Chivukula’s generosity, IIT Madras has named a new building on its campus the Krishna Chivukula Block.
Dr. Krishna Chivukula, originally from a Telugu medium school in India, pursued further education in the United States, earning an MBA from Harvard University. He is the founder of Indo-US MIM (Metal Injection Molding) and a firm specializing in advanced mass spectroscopy. His philanthropic spirit was inspired by the culture of giving prevalent among successful business leaders in the US.
Chivukula’s career includes notable achievements such as becoming Chief Engineer at Hoffman Industries in 1976, and later founding Shiva Technologies Inc. in 1990. His company became a global leader in trace element analysis through advanced mass spectroscopic techniques.
Dr. Chivukula expressed his desire to contribute to IIT Madras, inspired by the tradition of philanthropy in education observed in the United States. His donation not only supports IIT Madras but also exemplifies the impact of giving back to one’s alma mater.
