Apple Increases iPhone Production in India, Assembles 20% of Global iPhone Range

Apple has ramped up its production in India, now assembling 20% of all its iPhones, marking a significant shift away from its reliance on China. This includes the full range of iPhones, from the standard models to the premium titanium Pro variants. The company’s production in India for the financial year 2024-25 surged by nearly 60%, producing iPhones worth an estimated $22 billion at factory gate value.

The move is seen as part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its production footprint following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 lockdowns in China. In India, Apple’s iPhone assembly is carried out primarily at Foxconn Technology Group’s factory, with support from Tata Group’s electronics manufacturing arm, which acquired Wistron Corp. and oversees operations at Pegatron Corp. These companies have become crucial to Apple’s supply chain in the country.

India has become an increasingly important hub for Apple, with the company benefiting from state subsidies aimed at transforming the nation into a global manufacturing center, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to boost local production.

In addition to domestic sales, India has also become a significant export hub for Apple, with iPhone shipments reaching ₹1.5 lakh crore ($17.4 billion) in 2024-25. Much of this was exported to the United States, where demand for Apple products remains strong. This boost in exports follows the announcement of reciprocal tariffs by President Donald Trump, which initially impacted Apple’s Chinese manufacturing but did not apply to electronics products like smartphones.

Apple’s presence in India is growing not just in terms of production but also market share. The company now holds nearly 8% of the Indian smartphone market, with iPhone sales contributing to nearly $8 billion in fiscal 2024. This development marks a critical step in Apple’s strategy to reduce its dependence on China and increase its manufacturing footprint in other parts of Asia, particularly in India.

While India’s role in Apple’s global supply chain continues to grow, it highlights the country’s increasing importance as a manufacturing and export hub for multinational corporations.
