In a shocking turn of events, Infosys reportedly fired over 300 trainees at its Mysuru campus, asking them to vacate the premises on the same day. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the terminated employees, many of whom had waited over two years to join the company, were given no time to arrange alternative accommodation.
Trainees Left Stranded, Pleas Ignored
A heart-wrenching incident was reported where a female trainee, devastated by the sudden termination, tearfully begged the management to allow her to stay the night. “Please let me stay the night. I will leave tomorrow. Where will I go right now?” she pleaded on February 7, only to be told to vacate by 6 PM.
Her colleague, who witnessed the conversation, claimed that Infosys officials responded indifferently, saying, “We don’t know. You are no longer part of the company. Vacate the premises by 6 PM.”
Infosys’ Justification for Layoffs
The layoffs were reportedly due to the trainees failing internal assessments despite three attempts. Infosys defended its decision, stating, “At Infosys, we have a rigorous hiring process where all freshers, after undergoing extensive foundational training at our Mysuru campus, are expected to clear internal assessments.”
The company emphasized that failing these assessments results in termination, as clearly mentioned in the employment contract.
NITES Alleges Higher Layoff Numbers, Plans Legal Action
The IT employee union NITES (Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate) countered Infosys’ claims, stating that the number of affected freshers was significantly higher. The union condemned the layoffs as unethical and is planning to file an official complaint with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, seeking urgent intervention.
Many of the terminated employees had already endured long waiting periods before joining Infosys, only to be let go within months. The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with users criticizing Infosys for its handling of the situation and lack of empathy towards fresh graduates.
As the controversy grows, industry experts and labor unions are calling for stricter regulations to protect freshers from such abrupt layoffs and ensure fair employment practices in India’s IT sector.
