Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of India’s leading IT firms, has issued a stern ultimatum to employees who continue to work remotely, despite the company’s directive to return to office premises. According to reports from The Economic Times, employees failing to comply with the mandate to resume office duties by March will face “severe repercussions.”
The software giant’s decision marks a continuation of its stance established in October last year when it made it mandatory for employees to be present in the office at least five days a week. NG Subramaniam, TCS’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), emphasized that this recent communication serves as the “final call” for remote workers, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
Subramaniam reiterated the company’s concerns regarding work culture and security issues as primary factors driving the decision to enforce a return to office policy. He highlighted the heightened risks of cyberattacks in the current context, emphasizing the inadequacy of home setups in comparison to office environments in terms of security controls.
TCS aims to restore the pre-pandemic work culture and move away from the hybrid model necessitated by Covid-19. Subramaniam expressed apprehension about the efficiency of remote onboarding and offboarding processes, citing instances where individuals joined and left the company solely through online interactions during the pandemic, without any offline engagement.
During the earnings announcement for the December quarter on January 11, TCS disclosed that 65% of its workforce had been attending office for up to three days a week. The company’s headcount currently exceeds 616,000 employees, underlining the scale and significance of this transition back to office-based work.
The decision to compel employees to return to office premises reflects TCS’s commitment to maintaining a robust work culture and addressing security concerns amid evolving cyber threats. While acknowledging the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic, TCS remains steadfast in its efforts to ensure operational resilience and foster a conducive working environment for its workforce.
As the deadline for compliance approaches, employees are urged to heed the company’s directive and prepare for a return to office routines in adherence to TCS’s policies and protocols.
