Zoom Call For 20 Hours: Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal Responds to 'Pure Veg' Row

Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal was honored with the Entrepreneur Of The Year award. During an interview , Goyal shared insights into Zomato’s recent controversy surrounding the announcement of a ‘pure veg’ food delivery service, revealing that Zomato’s top team engaged in a marathon 20-hour Zoom call to address the situation.

The controversy erupted following Zomato’s announcement of a ‘pure veg’ fleet, where delivery partners would handle only vegetarian food packets. This decision faced backlash on social media, with concerns raised about potential discrimination and practical issues, such as differentiating orders and possible societal implications.

Responding swiftly to the feedback, Goyal and his team scrapped the plan for a separate uniform for ‘pure veg’ delivery partners. Instead, Zomato will indicate on the app when orders opt for the ‘pure veg’ service, while all delivery partners will continue to wear the familiar red uniform.

Expressing gratitude for the feedback from social media users, Goyal acknowledged the unintended consequences of the initial rollout and emphasized Zomato’s commitment to listening to feedback without ego or pride.

Goyal explained that the decision to introduce the ‘pure veg’ fleet was based on a survey aimed at enhancing customer experience. However, he noted that the team lacked awareness of the historical context and meanings associated with such terms, highlighting their commitment to inclusivity and openness to feedback.

In his social media posts, Goyal clarified that the ‘pure veg’ service is purely based on dietary preferences and does not discriminate based on religious or political preferences.

During the interview, Goyal also shared a lighter moment when asked if he had ever ordered food through Zomato’s competitor, Swiggy. He jokingly replied, “Never,” with a smile.

The incident underscores the challenges and considerations involved in navigating sensitive issues while striving to meet customer preferences in the competitive food delivery aggregator space. Zomato’s response reflects a willingness to learn and adapt, ensuring inclusivity and customer satisfaction remain at the forefront of its services.
