Today, food delivery giant Zomato announced its intention to appeal against a goods and services tax (GST) notice totaling over ₹23 crore. The company’s company secretary and compliance officer, Sandhya Sethia, expressed confidence in their case against the GST demand.
In a letter addressed to the capital markets, Sethia stated that Zomato believes it has substantial grounds to challenge the GST demand. The notice alleges that Zomato received an excess amount as input tax credit, accompanied by interest and penalty charges.
Zomato has maintained that it provided clarification on the issue, supported by relevant documents and legal precedents. However, the authorities purportedly did not fully consider this information while issuing the order.
Sethia emphasized that Zomato is prepared to file an appeal before the appropriate authority and does not anticipate any financial impact on the company as a result of this dispute.
Established in 2010, Zomato operates a technology platform that connects customers with restaurant and delivery partners. The platform serves as a hub for users to explore restaurants, read and write reviews, and place food delivery orders.
