Reliance’s media arm, Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, has successfully acquired the website domain jiohotstar.com, ending months of legal and commercial disputes, according to a report by Business Standard. The domain, which has been the subject of various ownership claims, was initially registered by a Delhi-based engineer, who had reportedly asked Reliance to fund his education at Cambridge in exchange for the domain. However, Reliance refused to meet the engineer’s demands, setting the stage for a complex chain of events.

The jiohotstar.com domain is now registered under Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd, with Manish Painuly, Senior Director at Viacom18, listed as the registrant and administrative contact, according to WHOIS records. Painuly, who has been with Viacom18 for over 16 years, currently oversees the company’s digital transformation efforts.

The domain’s journey has been anything but straightforward. After Reliance’s refusal to fund the engineer’s education, the domain was subsequently sold to Dubai-based siblings Jainam and Jivika. The siblings, however, chose to transfer the domain to Reliance without charge, calling the action an act of “Seva” and denying any financial transaction or external pressure from the conglomerate.

Viacom18, part of Reliance, is known for operating popular television channels such as Colors, MTV India, and Nickelodeon. Its digital platform, JioCinema, has gained significant attention following its acquisition of the digital streaming rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), further boosting its presence in the digital entertainment space.

The acquisition of jiohotstar.com aligns with Reliance’s growing dominance in digital media and its ongoing investments to expand its digital portfolio. This move marks a pivotal moment in the company’s digital journey as it continues to solidify its position in the competitive streaming landscape.

The resolution of this domain dispute reflects Reliance’s broader strategy to enhance its digital capabilities and leverage its media assets across multiple platforms, ensuring its continued growth in the ever-evolving entertainment sector.

Viacom18’s strategic move to secure the jiohotstar.com domain underscores the company’s focus on securing valuable digital assets as part of its ongoing digital expansion.
