“Tragedy Strikes Bihar as Two Die and Two Lose Eyesight in Suspected Toxic Liquor Case”
In a suspected hooch tragedy in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur district, two lives were lost, and two individuals lost their eyesight after consuming spurious liquor. The alleged supplier’s wife and daughter have been taken into custody, while authorities investigate the incident.
In a heartbreaking incident that highlights the persistent challenges of alcohol prohibition, two individuals have lost their lives, and two others have been left blind after reportedly consuming toxic liquor in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar. The incident unfolded in the Qazi Mohammadpur police station area, shedding light on the ongoing battle against illegal alcohol production and distribution.
Additional SP Awadhesh Dixit revealed that the victims, Umesh Sah (55) and Pappu Ram, tragically lost their lives in the Pokharia Pir Mohalla. Their family members recounted that they returned home inebriated three days prior and fell seriously ill. Despite receiving medical treatment, their conditions continued to deteriorate, ultimately leading to their demise.
Another grim aspect of this incident involves Dharmendra Ram and Raju Ram, residents of the same locality, who suffered a severe loss of eyesight due to the toxic brew they consumed. Dharmendra Ram provided crucial information to the police, revealing that they had obtained the liquor from Shivchandra Paswan, a member of a family allegedly involved in the illegal alcohol trade.
A statement from the district police headquarters confirmed that the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic experts are meticulously investigating the area for evidence that may shed light on this tragic event.
The survivors, who have been robbed of their eyesight, disclosed that they were frequent visitors to Paswan’s hideout, which was situated in close proximity to a local ice factory. It was there that they would obtain their quota of toddy, a traditional alcoholic beverage. However, on the fateful day, Paswan informed them that toddy was unavailable and instead offered a concoction, assuring them that it would provide an intoxicating experience.
It is important to note that Bihar has been under a strict ban on the sale and consumption of liquor since 2016, implemented by the Nitish Kumar government. This ban extends to various forms of locally made intoxicants, including toddy and mahua.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities are intensifying their efforts to locate Shivchandra Paswan, who has a history of previous arrests for violating the prohibition law. Paswan’s wife and daughter are currently undergoing police interrogation as part of the ongoing probe into this tragic incident.
The Bihar government’s commitment to enforcing prohibition is evident, but incidents like these underscore the challenges posed by the persistence of illegal liquor production and distribution networks, which continue to endanger lives in the state.
