In a significant development for India’s drone industry, aerospace giants Thales and Garuda Aerospace have announced a strategic collaboration aimed at enhancing the country’s drone ecosystem. The partnership, unveiled on Tuesday, is set to bolster secure and efficient drone operations through the integration of advanced technologies and local expertise.

Under the agreement, Thales will contribute its extensive knowledge in unmanned traffic management (UTM) solutions, UAV detection, and system integration. The French multinational, which has been active in India since 1953, will leverage its global experience to support the development of strategic UTM capabilities. These include critical aspects such as registration, authorization, and geo-awareness.

Garuda Aerospace, founded in 2015, will complement Thales’s efforts by providing its specialized skills in UAV manufacturing and operations. With a fleet of over 2,500 drones and a network of 4,000 pilots across 400 districts, Garuda brings significant expertise and market presence to the table. The company has established dominance in the precision agriculture drone segment, holding a 50% share in the sector following the launch of 100 Garuda drones in 100 villages by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The collaboration is aligned with the Indian government’s vision of creating a robust and self-reliant drone ecosystem under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Both companies aim to drive innovation and support India’s goal of becoming a global hub for drone technology by 2030.

Ashish Saraf, VP and Country Director at Thales in India, highlighted the alignment of the partnership with national objectives. “This collaboration supports the country in realizing its ambition to become a major global drone hub. It integrates Thales’s cutting-edge UTM technology with Garuda’s local expertise, paving the way for safer and more efficient drone operations.”

Agnishwar Jayaprakash, Founder and CEO of Garuda Aerospace, emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership. “Combining our large fleet and experience with Thales’s advanced technology, we aim to revolutionize the drone sector in India and play a key role in its global ascent.”
