C A special court in Karnataka has handed over nearly 27 kg of gold ornaments, including two golden crowns and a gold sword, to the Tamil Nadu government as part of a process related to the long-standing disproportionate assets case against former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. These items had been stored in the Karnataka state treasury for nearly 21 years.

Along with the gold, a treasure trove of 481 gold articles—one shaped in Jayalalithaa’s profile—land documents covering over 1,520 acres, and cash were also transferred. Visuals from the handover process showed officials carrying bags, suitcases, and trunks full of the confiscated assets.

Legal Battle Over Jayalalithaa’s Assets

The disproportionate assets case against Jayalalithaa, which lasted 18 years, was originally filed in Chennai but was later transferred to Bengaluru. In 2014, a special court in Bengaluru convicted Jayalalithaa, her close aide VK Sasikala, and Sasikala’s relatives VN Sudhakaran and J Ilavarasi. Though the Karnataka High Court acquitted them in 2015, the Supreme Court overturned the decision in 2017.

On January 29, a special CBI court ordered the transfer of all confiscated assets to the Tamil Nadu government. On Friday, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition by Jayalalithaa’s niece and nephew, J Deepa and J Deepak, who claimed ownership of the items. The court ruled that Jayalalithaa’s death did not amount to an acquittal from the corruption charges.

Will the Gold Be Auctioned?

Public prosecutor Kiran S Javali stated that the trial court had ordered the confiscation of 27 kg of gold ornaments and land assets spread over 1,526 acres. These were officially handed over to Tamil Nadu’s Home and Vigilance departments.

“The Tamil Nadu government can either deposit the gold with the Reserve Bank of India or auction it to recover the money,” Javali added.
