“Swiggy CEO Recalls How a College Project Led to the Birth of the Company”

Swiggy’s reclusive CEO, Sriharsha Majety, shared an inspiring story on the day of the company’s much-awaited IPO listing, revealing that the idea for the food delivery giant was first conceived as a college project. Speaking at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) listing ceremony, Majety reflected on how the concept, initially drafted during his time at IIM Calcutta, evolved into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise.

“I came up with the idea during a college project, but I completely forgot about it once the project was over,” Majety admitted. “Then, in a very different way, I came across it again without consciously realizing it.”

He described the journey from idea to execution as nothing short of a miracle. “For that idea to have first gotten executed is in itself a rarity. But to execute it at the size and scale that we have right now is an absolute miracle,” Majety remarked.

The Birth of Swiggy

Majety’s entrepreneurial journey began with Bundl, a logistics startup he co-founded. However, the venture faced challenges, prompting him to pivot. In 2014, Majety teamed up with co-founders Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini to transform Bundl into a food delivery service—what we now know as Swiggy.

Since its inception, Swiggy has grown into one of India’s largest food delivery platforms, serving millions of customers and expanding its operations across the country.

Swiggy’s IPO marks a significant milestone in its journey, showcasing the impact of an idea that started as a simple college project and turned into a leading name in India’s tech ecosystem.
