Zoho Corp founder Sridhar Vembu has announced his decision to step down as CEO, handing over the reins to co-founder Shailesh Kumar Davey while assuming the role of ‘Chief Scientist’ to lead deep research and development initiatives.

In a statement shared on X, Vembu explained the reasoning behind his decision: “A new chapter begins today. In view of the various challenges and opportunities facing us, including recent major developments in AI, it has been decided that it is best that I should focus full time on R&D initiatives, along with pursuing my personal rural development mission.”

Known for his commitment to sustainable development and fostering the rural economy, Vembu’s new role will prioritize advancing Zoho’s research capabilities, particularly in response to the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.

Leadership Transition

As part of the leadership transition, Shailesh Kumar Davey, a co-founder of Zoho, will take over as the new CEO of the group. Additionally, other key leadership roles have been realigned:

  • Tony Thomas will lead Zoho’s US operations.
  • Rajesh Ganesan will head the ManageEngine division.
  • Mani Vembu will oversee the Zoho.com division.

Expressing enthusiasm about his new role, Vembu remarked, “The future of our company entirely depends on how well we navigate the R&D challenge, and I am looking forward to my new assignment with energy and vigor. I am also very happy to get back to hands-on technical work.”

About Sridhar Vembu

Sridhar Vembu, a Ph.D. graduate in electrical engineering from Princeton University, founded Zoho Corp, which has grown into one of India’s most successful privately-owned technology firms. Along with his siblings, he holds a majority stake in the company.

Under his leadership, Zoho has also become known for its in-house Zoho University, which upskills students fresh out of school. Many graduates of this program go on to join the company.

This transition marks a significant chapter for Zoho Corp as it positions itself to tackle new technological challenges, particularly in the AI space, under Vembu’s leadership in R&D and Davey’s stewardship as CEO.
