In a major development, low-cost carrier SpiceJet has revealed plans to commence operations to the picturesque Lakshadweep islands under the government’s regional connectivity scheme, Udey Desh ka Aam Nagarik (UDAN). During the airline’s virtual annual general meeting on Wednesday, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Ajay Singh announced the exclusive rights to operate two flights to Lakshadweep, a move that aims to enhance connectivity to the island destination.

Currently, Alliance Air, a regional airline, is the sole operator to Lakshadweep, serving the Kochi-Agatti-Kochi sector. SpiceJet’s entry into the market is expected to bring more options and competition, providing travelers with increased accessibility to this tropical paradise.

Ajay Singh confirmed that plans for the Lakshadweep flights are in progress, and further details, including routes and schedules, will be announced soon. The decision to expand services to Lakshadweep aligns with the government’s efforts to boost tourism in the region, especially after a recent diplomatic row involving unpleasant remarks made by Maldives officials about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep on January 2.

In addition to the Lakshadweep venture, SpiceJet also disclosed its intention to launch flights connecting Ayodhya with multiple cities across the country. The airline aims to facilitate easier travel to Ayodhya, an important pilgrimage and cultural destination.

The announcement comes on the heels of SpiceJet’s Board of Directors approving fresh fundraising plans in December, totaling Rs. 2250 crore. Ajay Singh highlighted that a significant portion of this fund infusion will be utilized to bolster the airline’s growth and expand its network. SpiceJet has faced financial challenges in recent months, leading to operational difficulties and a notable increase in flight delays, with nearly 45% of flights experiencing delays on a daily basis.

“Fund infusion will lead to a stronger and more resilient SpiceJet. It will open market potential and opportunities for the airline and will help in bringing grounded planes back to flying,” stated Ajay Singh, expressing optimism about the positive impact of the financial boost.

As SpiceJet prepares to unveil its new flight routes and schedules, passengers can anticipate enhanced travel options, improved connectivity, and a potential boost to tourism in both Lakshadweep and Ayodhya.
