Shiv Nadar, the founder of HCL Technologies, has once again secured the top position as the leading Indian philanthropist, making annual donations of ₹2,042 crore, according to the Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List 2023. This marks the third time in five years that the 78-year-old entrepreneur has achieved this distinction. His contributions, which have increased by 76% compared to the previous year, primarily support arts and culture, including initiatives such as VidyaGyan, Shiv Nadar University, Shiv Nadar School, Shiksha Initiative, and Kiran Nadar Museum of Art.

Azim Premji, the founder of Wipro, claimed the second position, with a significant jump of 267% in his contributions, totaling ₹1,774 crore, primarily directed towards education-related causes.

Reliance Industries Limited Chairman Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla of Aditya Birla Group secured the third and fourth positions, with donations of ₹376 crore and ₹287 crore, respectively.

The Edelgive Hurun India Philanthropy List ranks individuals who have donated ₹5 crore or more in cash or cash equivalents between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023.

Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, climbed two positions from the previous year to claim the fifth spot, contributing ₹285 crore for educational causes. The Bajaj family jumped 11 places to reach the sixth position, donating ₹264 crore, primarily in the education sector.

Vedanta Group’s Anil Agarwal and family were positioned in the seventh spot, donating ₹241 crore annually for charitable causes in the healthcare sector, particularly supporting the Nand Ghar project, which aims to impact the lives of millions of children and women in India.

Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and his wife Rohini secured the eighth and tenth positions, with annual donations of ₹189 crore and ₹170 crore, respectively. The Nilekanis have committed to the ‘Giving Pledge,’ dedicating half of their wealth to philanthropic activities.

Cyrus and Adar Poonawala of the Serum Institute of India achieved the ninth rank, contributing ₹179 crore for healthcare causes, marking a climb of four positions.

Collectively, the top 10 philanthropists donated ₹5,806 crore in 2022-23, reflecting a significant increase from the previous financial year when the total contributions amounted to ₹3,034 crore.

This report also highlights a growing trend of large-scale donations, with the number of donors contributing over ₹100 crore and ₹50 crore increasing in recent years. The philanthropic landscape in India is evolving, with prominent figures channeling their resources towards various causes, contributing to positive social impact and change.
