Tata is set to revolutionize iPhone manufacturing in India with plans for the country’s largest Apple assembly plant in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur, aiming to amplify local production and bolster job opportunities.

The ambitious project, reported by Bloomberg, reveals Tata’s initiative to establish a sprawling iPhone manufacturing hub in Hosur, a move anticipated to generate employment for over 50,000 individuals within two years. This state-of-the-art facility is projected to feature more than 20 assembly lines, aiming for operational readiness within 12-18 months.

This strategic development signifies a significant leap for Apple’s localized supply chain, enhancing collaboration with Tata. This venture comes on the heels of Tata’s acquisition of an iPhone assembly plant from Wistron in Karnataka. The forthcoming Tamil Nadu site is poised to surpass the production rates of the existing Karnataka facility, promising a substantial surge in iPhone output.

The establishment of the Tamil Nadu plant, anticipated to commence operations by late 2024, could potentially drive down the cost of Apple smartphones due to increased local manufacturing. This intensified production might intensify the competition between Apple and Samsung within the smartphone market.

Tata Electronics, which already operates a substantial manufacturing unit in Hosur housing over 5,000 employees focused on crafting iPhone outer casings, has initiated the hiring process for the upcoming Tamil Nadu facility. The surge in iPhone production within India fuels optimism for enhanced job creation and manufacturing efficiency.

Earlier strides in the expansion of iPhone production across India saw Tata’s acquisition of Wistron’s assembly plant in Karnataka last October. This Bengaluru-based facility, obtained for a staggering USD 123 million, currently employs over 10,000 workers. Tata Electronics aims to ship iPhones worth USD 1.4 billion from this location, offering incentives to the workforce for achieving this milestone.

Tata’s deep-rooted commitment to iPhone manufacturing in India stands out amidst industry shifts, as the company continues to invest in this sector despite slender profit margins associated with Apple products. This forward-looking endeavor not only underlines Tata’s dedication but also positions India as a key player in Apple’s global supply chain for iPhones, signaling a potential paradigm shift in the country’s electronics manufacturing landscape.
