Ashwin Dani, the visionary leader behind Asian Paints’ remarkable growth, has sadly passed away at the age of 79. His pioneering contributions to the paint industry and commitment to customer-centricity leave a lasting legacy.

Ashwin Dani, a prominent figure in the Indian business landscape and a key contributor to Asian Paints’ success, passed away on September 28, 2023, at the age of 79. His legacy is deeply intertwined with the growth and innovation of Asian Paints, the country’s largest paint manufacturer with a group turnover of Rs 21,700 crore.
Born on September 26, 1944, in Mumbai, Ashwin Dani embarked on his journey in the world of business and innovation after completing his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Mumbai University in 1966. He then pursued a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Akron in the United States, further honing his expertise.
In 1968, Ashwin Dani joined his family’s business, Asian Paints, as a senior executive, marking the beginning of a career that would leave an indelible mark on the paint industry. His rise through the ranks was meteoric, as he held various pivotal positions within the company, including director (research and development), works director, full-time director, vice-chairman, and managing director.
Ashwin Dani’s impact extended beyond corporate roles; he was a true innovator in the field of paints and coatings. He pioneered the concept of computer color matching, a groundbreaking development now widely used across industries such as paints, plastics, printing inks, and textiles. His vision also led to the creation of revolutionary products, including Apcolite Natural Wood Finish, an innovative system for wood surface finishing, and the Automotive Refinishing System, a fast-drying alkyd enamel that found widespread use in the automobile aftermarket segment.
At the 18th edition of the CNBC-TV18 India Business Leader Awards earlier this year, Ashwin Dani emphasized the paramount importance of customer-centricity in Asian Paints’ remarkable success. He underscored that aligning business strategies, innovations, and service delivery with customer needs and preferences was central to the company’s enduring growth and prosperity.
Ashwin Dani’s visionary leadership and commitment to innovation have left an indomitable legacy in the paint industry and the broader business community. As of 2023, Forbes estimated his net worth at approximately $7.1 billion, a testament to his enduring impact.
The passing of Ashwin Dani is a profound loss to the business world, and he will be remembered for his pioneering spirit, dedication to excellence, and unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of entrepreneurs and innovators.
