Swiggy CEO Rohit Kapoor Critiques "Hustle Culture," Advocates for Work-Life Balance

Swiggy Food and Marketplace CEO Rohit Kapoor has taken a stand against the toxic “hustle culture” that has permeated various industries, emphasizing the need for a healthy work-life balance. Speaking at Techsparks, an event held in Bengaluru, Kapoor highlighted the detrimental effects of relentless work habits on both mental and physical health.

During his conversation with Shradha Sharma, Kapoor urged employees to prioritize family time and avoid unnecessary late-night work. “You don’t need to hustle and work till 3 am,” he asserted, dismissing the glorification of late-night work hours. He remarked, “Those who say they work till 3 am never mention that they reach the office by 1 pm the next day,” criticizing the culture of boasting about extreme work schedules. “It’s bullsh*t,” he added candidly.

While acknowledging the importance of hard work, Kapoor stressed that pushing oneself to extreme limits is unsustainable. “Some days, you need to work late but not daily,” he noted, underscoring that sacrificing personal life for professional success is not a viable path. “Ghar jao [Go home],” he advised, encouraging a shift in mindset towards valuing personal time.

Kapoor’s remarks resonate with a growing sentiment against hustle culture, which is often characterized by long work hours and an emphasis on productivity at the expense of well-being. This perspective stands in contrast to views from some industry leaders, such as Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who has advocated for 70-hour work weeks.

Responses to Kapoor’s comments have been overwhelmingly positive. Many users on social media expressed their support, with one commenting, “Narayan Murthy getting panic attacks watching this,” while another stated, “Someone is normal, finally.” A third user praised his stance, saying, “Finally, someone said something sensible.”

As the conversation around work-life balance continues to evolve, Kapoor’s call for a more compassionate approach to work resonates with employees seeking to prioritize their mental health and family time over the relentless pursuit of professional success.
