In a significant move towards expanding affordable digital services in emerging markets, Mukesh Ambani is set to launch a new telecom venture in Ghana. A unit of Ambani-controlled Reliance Industries Ltd., Radisys Corp, will spearhead this initiative by providing key network infrastructure, applications, and smartphones for Ghana-based Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC).

According to Bloomberg, NGIC aims to revolutionize mobile broadband services in Ghana by offering 5G broadband to mobile operators and internet service providers. Harkirit Singh, the executive director of NGIC, stated that the company will commence operations by the end of this year, promising affordable digital services to the people of Ghana.

NGIC’s strategic partners include industry giants such as Nokia Oyj, Tech Mahindra Ltd., and Microsoft Corp. Ghana’s telecom market is currently dominated by three main operators: MTN Ghana, Vodafone Ghana, and state-run AirtelTigo. However, NGIC’s technological prowess and its exclusive 5G license, the only one in Ghana, are expected to give it a competitive edge.

Singh highlighted that NGIC’s partnership network and technological capabilities would enable it to build broadband services at scale, a significant financial challenge for individual mobile carriers. Two African telecom firms, Ascend Digital Solutions Ltd. and K-NET, hold a combined 55% stake in NGIC, while the Ghanaian government owns just under 10%.

Ghana’s Minister for Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, endorsed NGIC’s initiative, stating that it would provide affordable mobile broadband services and devices, mirroring the success of India’s low-cost mobile data revolution. NGIC’s capital expenditure for the next three years is projected at $145 million.

Singh also mentioned that none of NGIC’s strategic partners, including Reliance, currently hold any equity in the company. “First we have to be successful to show the value that we create before they come in. That’s the discussion we’re having with them,” he explained.

With this venture, Mukesh Ambani aims to replicate the success of India’s digital transformation in Africa, starting with Ghana, by leveraging advanced technology and strategic partnerships to offer affordable and scalable digital services.
