In a recent visit to India, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shed light on the pivotal role Indian villagers are playing in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. During his annual trip to the country, Nadella emphasized the immense potential of AI and the opportunities it offers, particularly in underserved communities.

Nadella underscored the remarkable contributions made by residents in Indian villages towards the development of AI tools for Microsoft. One such instance is the collaboration with a social impact organization based in Kharadi, Maharashtra, where individuals actively participate in training AI models by providing their voices in the Marathi language.

Highlighting the significance of this initiative, Nadella remarked, “Great to be in India this week meeting with changemakers like the team at Karya, who are doing the critical work of building high-quality datasets for AI and expanding economic opportunity at the same time.”

For many in India, especially those who do not speak Hindi or English, accessing technology can be challenging. Apps, tools, and digital assistants readily available to Hindi and English speakers often remain inaccessible to others. Microsoft recognizes this gap and is committed to bridging it by ensuring its products are accessible in ‘under-resourced’ languages.

The project in Kharadi, Maharashtra, exemplifies Microsoft’s dedication to inclusivity. Through the Karya app, approved by Microsoft, individuals like Baby Rajaram Bokale, aged 53, contribute their voices by reading and recording stories in Marathi. Mrs. Bokale, who runs a small business grinding spices and chili peppers from her home, dedicated 11 days of work, totaling 5 hours, and earned ₹2,000.

Expressing her pride in contributing to the initiative, Mrs. Bokale shared, “I’m really proud that my voice is getting recorded, and someone is about to learn Marathi thanks to my voice. I’m also proud that it will make these tools and features available in Marathi.”

This collaborative effort not only empowers individuals like Mrs. Bokale economically but also ensures the cultural and linguistic diversity of India is reflected in the technology that shapes daily lives.

As technology continues to evolve, initiatives like these serve as a testament to the transformative potential of AI in fostering inclusivity and driving positive change in communities, especially in regions where access to technology remains limited. With Microsoft’s commitment and the enthusiasm of individuals like Mrs. Bokale, the journey towards a more inclusive and accessible digital future for all Indians takes a significant stride forward.
