A colossal 2,492-carat diamond has been unearthed in Botswana, potentially making it the world’s second-largest gem-quality diamond ever found, trailing only behind the famous Cullinan diamond.

The massive gemstone was discovered in the Karowe diamond mine, operated by Canadian mining firm Lucara Diamond Corp. “We are ecstatic about the recovery of this extraordinary 2,492-carat diamond,” said Lucara’s president, William Lamb. The company, however, has yet to provide detailed information about the diamond’s quality or its precise value.

Sources close to Lucara have suggested that the diamond could command a price exceeding $40 million, according to a report by the Financial Times. The diamond was identified and recovered using Lucara’s Mega Diamond Recovery (MDR) X-ray Transmission (XRT) technology, which was introduced in 2017 to help detect and preserve large, high-value diamonds.

Lamb highlighted the significance of this discovery, noting that it demonstrates the value of the company’s investment in XRT technology and reinforces the potential of the Karowe mine, which has produced several notable finds in recent years. Among these was a 1,758-carat diamond found in 2019, which was later acquired by luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton. In 2010, Graff Diamonds purchased a 1,109-carat diamond from Karowe for $53 million.

“This discovery underscores Karowe’s status as a world-class diamond mine and showcases the ongoing success of our operational and underground development strategy,” Lamb added.

The Cullinan diamond remains the largest gem-quality diamond ever discovered, weighing in at 3,106 carats. It was mined in South Africa in 1905 and subsequently cut into several smaller stones.
