The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a significant fare hike of 14.95%, effective from Saturday, impacting passengers across all routes operated by the corporation. This increase follows the formula established by the Hakim Committee and was approved on Friday by MSRTC authorities.
With this hike, commuters who rely on MSRTC buses, which operate a fleet of 15,000 buses, will now face higher charges for their daily travel. The MSRTC network, which serves approximately 55 lakh passengers daily, is one of the largest bus networks in India. The fare increase will apply to every route under the MSRTC’s extensive operation.
In addition to the MSRTC fare hike, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) has approved a ₹3 rise in the base fare for auto-rickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis. As a result, auto-rickshaw fares will increase from ₹23 to ₹26, and taxi base fares will rise from ₹28 to ₹31. The base fare for blue-and-silver AC cool cabs will also see an increase, climbing by ₹8, with the fare for the first 1.5 kilometers now set at ₹48, up from ₹40.
These new fares will only be applicable once all vehicles have their meters recalibrated to reflect the changes, ensuring uniformity across the transport sector.
Meanwhile, the Western Railway has implemented a three-day jumbo block from January 24 to 26, 2025, affecting several long-distance train services. The jumbo block was initiated for the construction of a bridge between Bandra and Mahim and will run from 11 PM until 8:30 AM each day. The disruptions are expected to affect trains like the Mumbai Central-Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express, the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Gujarat Superfast Express, and the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Shatabdi Express. Additionally, the Bhusaval-Dadar Special will short terminate at Borivali and will remain partially cancelled between Borivali and Dadar on January 25, 2025.
These changes are part of an ongoing effort to improve transportation infrastructure in the region, but commuters will need to plan ahead for disruptions and additional fare charges in the coming days.
