Lenovo India has unveiled ambitious plans to bolster its operations in the country with the establishment of its fourth largest research and development (R&D) centre in Bengaluru and the local production of 50,000 GPU-based AI servers starting next year.

According to a report by news agency PTI, Lenovo’s new R&D centre in Bengaluru will significantly enhance the company’s technological capabilities, contributing to key stages of the product life cycle, including system design and software development. The facility is set to match the standards of Lenovo’s global R&D centres, supporting a high-skill workforce and aligning with the company’s global operations.

Managing Director Shailendra Katyal emphasized that the servers will be produced at Lenovo’s Puducherry facility. “Lenovo will make 50,000 servers annually. The production will start next year. It will be manufactured at our Puducherry facility not only for India but also to be exported globally,” Katyal stated.

Lenovo’s commitment to local manufacturing and innovation is not new. The company has been manufacturing in India for nearly two decades, including the design and production of Android phones. Katyal highlighted that Lenovo’s expansion into server manufacturing is a continuation of this longstanding commitment. “We have been designing Android phones from India and now we are extending the same to server level as well. We export mobile phones from India to the Americas, and now servers will be exported across the world,” he added.

Amit Luthra, Managing Director of Lenovo India’s Infrastructure Group, elaborated on the significance of the new R&D centre. “We are setting up the fourth-largest research and development centre for Lenovo globally. The number of benches across our four major R&D centres is the same. The Indian R&D centre will have a high-skill ecosystem and will be on par with our global facilities,” Luthra said.

This development marks a significant step for Lenovo, reinforcing its commitment to India and its role in the global tech landscape. The new R&D centre and server production facility are expected to drive technological advancements and contribute to the growth of the tech ecosystem in Bengaluru and beyond.
