Instagram is currently grappling with a significant technical issue, leaving thousands of users unable to send or access direct messages (DMs). According to reports collected by Downdetector, the problems began around 5:14 PM on Tuesday, triggering a wave of complaints from users across the platform.
As of now, over 2,000 reports have been filed, indicating a considerable disruption to the Meta-owned photo-sharing service. Users have turned to alternative social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to vent their frustrations and to check if others are facing similar challenges.
“Ignored your DM? No, I didn’t!! Instagram is down!!” one user lamented on X. Others echoed similar sentiments, with one posting, “Is it me or is everyone else also not able to send DM on Instagram?” Another user added, “Messages aren’t delivering and show ‘failed to deliver’ after a few minutes. Anyone else experiencing this?”
As of now, there has been no official comment from Instagram or its parent company, Meta, regarding the nature or cause of the technical difficulties. Users are encouraged to keep an eye on the Instagram status page and Downdetector for any updates concerning the outage.
Recent Technical Issues with Instagram
This is not the first time Instagram has faced such issues. On October 15, both Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage that affected thousands of users in the U.S., with more than 12,000 incidents reported for Facebook and over 5,000 for Instagram.
Earlier this year, a technical issue caused a global outage affecting hundreds of thousands of users for over two hours, leading to more than 550,000 reports for Facebook and around 92,000 for Instagram, according to Downdetector.
