“IndiGo Discontinues Beverages in Cans on Flights Following BJP Leader’s Complaint”
IndiGo Airlines has ceased serving beverages in cans on its flights, offering passengers a complimentary glass of juice or coke with any snack purchase. This move comes after former Parliamentarian Swapan Dasgupta’s complaint about not being able to buy a soft drink during a flight. The airline cites this change as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability and affordability.

IndiGo Airlines has announced the discontinuation of serving beverages in cans on its flights, responding to concerns raised by former Parliamentarian and BJP member Swapan Dasgupta. Dasgupta had expressed dissatisfaction with the inability to purchase soft drinks separately during IndiGo flights, calling for the airline to reconsider its approach to extras.
An IndiGo spokesperson explained that the airline has revamped its services to deliver a more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective snack experience. They emphasized that this initiative aligns with IndiGo’s commitment to environmental sustainability, as it has prevented thousands of cans from being discarded.
The airline confirmed that it has indeed stopped serving beverages in cans onboard its flights. However, the statement did not specify when this change was implemented.
Swapan Dasgupta shared his concerns on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I discovered in mid-air on an Indigo flight that you can’t buy a soft drink. The airline has made it obligatory to also buy a snack, regardless of whether you want it or not. This is coercion, and I urge minister @JM_Scindia to restore the principles of choice to fliers. Squeezing fliers through all sorts of extras must stop.” He also tagged Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, but there was no response from the minister to the post.
IndiGo clarified that its customers can now enjoy a complimentary beverage of their choice when purchasing any snack onboard. The updated menu includes snack options paired with a glass of juice or coke, priced at ₹200, with the beverage being complimentary. The airline emphasized that its buy-on-board service is entirely optional, allowing passengers to exercise their choice.
IndiGo is India’s largest airline, holding a domestic market share of over 63 percent.
