An Indian-origin man in Singapore has become an overnight millionaire, winning a grand prize of USD 1 million (approximately Rs 8.45 crore) in a lucky draw held at Mustafa Jewellery, a popular store in the city-state. Balasubramanian Chithambaram, who bought a gold chain for his wife three months ago, was unexpectedly selected as the winner during the store’s Million Dollar Event on November 24.
Chithambaram, who had spent approximately Rs 3.7 lakh on the jewellery, was left elated and overwhelmed after his name was called out as the grand prize winner. To be eligible for the lucky draw, customers had to spend over Rs 15,786 at the store, making Chithambaram’s purchase a fortunate investment.
“What an unforgettable day at Mustafa Jewellery’s Million Dollar Event!” the store said in a post on social media, sharing the news of Chithambaram’s win. The event, which took place amidst cheers and excitement, marked a significant moment for the store and its patrons.
Upon receiving the life-changing news, Chithambaram shared his emotional response, noting that the day coincided with the fourth death anniversary of his father, calling it a “blessing.” He also expressed his intention to donate a portion of his winnings to the community as a gesture of gratitude.
The win even caught the attention of the Singapore High Commission in India, which posted a congratulatory message for Chithambaram on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Congratulations to Mr Balasubramanian for winning the US$ 1 million (8.5 crore rupees) lucky draw, shopping at the iconic Mustafa Center in Singapore. Crorepati dreams do come true in SG.”
Chithambaram’s win comes just days after a British man made headlines for winning the third-largest lottery prize of all time, pocketing a staggering 177 million pounds (approximately Rs 1804.16 crore) in the Euromillions jackpot.
Chithambaram’s victory highlights the unpredictable nature of lotteries, where luck can change a person’s life in an instant. As he enjoys his newfound fortune, the Singaporean man’s story serves as a reminder of the power of fate and the joy that unexpected windfalls can bring.
