Former RBI Chief Shaktikanta Das Named Principal Secretary to PM Modi
New Delhi: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a government notification issued today. His appointment is co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever comes earlier, as per the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Key Appointments and Extensions
Alongside Mr. Das’ appointment, the government has also extended the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam by another year, starting from February 24, 2025. A 1987-batch retired IAS officer, Mr. Subrahmanyam was initially appointed as CEO of NITI Aayog for a two-year term in February 2023.
Shaktikanta Das’ Illustrious Career
Shaktikanta Das served as the RBI Governor for six years from December 2018 and played a crucial role in India’s financial stability, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. His leadership during this period included a range of monetary policy measures, liquidity support, and regulatory policies to cushion the economy from the crisis.
With over four decades of experience, Mr. Das has held key positions in finance, taxation, industries, and infrastructure at both the central and state government levels. His tenure at the RBI saw significant reforms in monetary policy, financial sector regulations, and digital banking initiatives.
