Notably, Starlink’s application for the global mobile personal communication by satellite services (GMPCS) license places it as the third company in India to acquire such a license, following in the footsteps of OneWeb and Reliance Jio.
Starlink is anticipated to play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity in India, especially in regions where traditional optical fibers or towers struggle to deliver high-speed internet. The company is known for providing impressive download speeds ranging from 25 to 220 Mbps, with upload speeds typically falling between 5 to 20 Mbps. Users often experience speeds surpassing 100 Mbps, making it a promising alternative for areas with limited connectivity options.
Despite not officially disclosing its pricing model for the Indian market, reports suggest that Starlink’s service might cost around ₹1,58,000 in the first year, as indicated by the company’s former India head. In the second year, the cost is expected to be ₹1,15,000 plus a 30 percent tax, given the one-time purchase of equipment. The user equipment’s base price is projected to be ₹37,400, accompanied by a monthly service fee of ₹7,425. The final pricing details will be unveiled once Starlink receives the official go-ahead to operate in India.
As Starlink’s impending debut draws near, the telecom landscape in India is set to witness a formidable contender, with Elon Musk’s brainchild aiming to bridge the digital divide and provide robust internet connectivity, even in the remotest corners of the country.
