EgyptAir Passenger Suffers Serious Facial Injuries from Falling Overhead Luggage

A 31-year-old man from Connecticut has initiated a federal lawsuit against EgyptAir, claiming he sustained severe injuries during a flight from Cairo to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. Jarek Neczypor alleges that the incident occurred on August 17 aboard Flight 985 when a rolling bag fell from the overhead compartment and struck him in the face.

The impact from the bag resulted in significant injuries, including a cracked upper incisor tooth and severe facial trauma, according to court documents filed in Manhattan. Following the incident, cabin crew moved Neczypor to another seat, which he claims was damaged and unsecured to the floor. Throughout the 11.5-hour flight, he reportedly suffered from neck and back pain due to the defective seat.

Neczypor’s lawsuit seeks unspecified damages, citing ongoing pain, anguish, and mental suffering stemming from the incident. He contends that EgyptAir’s negligence and failure to ensure passenger safety directly contributed to his injuries.

This incident is reminiscent of a similar occurrence in July when an elderly woman was injured on a Cathay Pacific flight to London after a piece of luggage fell from an overhead compartment, striking her on the head. The woman received immediate medical attention at the airport and was later transferred to a hospital for further treatment.

Airlines typically hold liability for passenger injuries unless they can prove that the injuries resulted from the passenger’s own negligence. As Neczypor seeks justice for his ordeal, the case underscores the ongoing concerns regarding passenger safety in air travel.
